SPring Course and Summer School 2010
General Information: LOCATION

The Courtauld Institute of Art is the foremost centre in Britain for the study of the history of art and has a renowned international reputation. The Courtauld is based in Somerset House, one of the grandest and most famous neo-classical buildings in the centre of London, which was designed by Sir William Chambers in the late eighteenth century. The Courtauld’s rooms are rich in historical associations, being originally designed for, and inhabited by, the Royal Academy and other learned societies.
The world-famous Courtauld Gallery collections range from the 13th century to the present day and include superb Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, works by Rubens and Gainsborough as well as by celebrated Renaissance artists, and prints and drawings by Michelangelo, Leonardo, Hogarth and Rembrandt, among many others. There are also displays of 20th-century paintings and sculptures by artists such as Kandinsky and Rodin. The East Wing Collection, a thought-provoking exhibition of contemporary art, is on view throughout The Courtauld.
Between 17 June and 19 September 2010, The Courtauld Gallery will also present the exhibition ‘The Courtauld Collects: 20 Years of Acquisitions’. The display will celebrate some of the outstanding works The Courtauld Gallery acquired in the two decades since its move to Somerset House. Highlights include works by Turner, Constable, Ingres, Degas and Seurat; in addition we are delighted to unveil our latest important acquisition, Joshua Reynolds’s late painting ‘Cupid and Psyche’.
