IN FOCUS: CLASSICISMS
showcasing art history series 6 2011-2012
A NEW SEASON OF TUESDAY EVENING LECTURES IN ART HISTORY
AUTUMN TERM 2011
'Classicisms: the survival and revivals of the arts of classical antiquity'
An awareness of the enduring influence of classical antiquity is vital to a proper understanding of the development of Western art history. Ruling elites from Medicean Florence to ‘Augustan’ London aspired to the grandeur and virtues of ancient Greece or Rome, and encouraged artistic communities to study and emulate the imposing relics of classical art and architecture.
The periodical return to ‘classical’ principles in art - into the twentieth century and beyond – often signalled a rejection of dominant cultural trends of the recent past, and a re-assertion of ‘order’ and harmony.
In the autumn term, our lecturers investigate changing definitions of what constitutes the ‘classical’ in art and of its value. We will look at aspects of the arts of late antiquity itself, at the survival and re-use of actual classical remains and at different artistic responses to the arts of antiquity from the early Christian period to the twentieth century.
