On Saturday 29th January the Joint Education Department held its first one-day conference in the Kenneth Clark Lecture Theatre to coincide with the Wyndham Lewis exhibition

at the Courtauld Institute of Art Gallery. Titled Wyndham Lewis: One-Man Avant-Garde? it was organised in collaboration with Tate Britain and in association with Bath Spa University and the University of Plymouth Art History Department. Over 120 people attended the day, which offered participants the opportunity to discuss Lewis’ art, writing and ideas and to explore his standing as an exemplar of the avant garde, as well as an opportunity to visit the exhibition. Speakers included Jacky Klein who curated the exhibition for the Courtauld, Richard Humphrys from Tate Britain and Professor Laura Marcus from the University of Sussex. Papers included a discussion of Lewis’ Shakespeare criticism, exploration of his highly original and controversial novels, as well as considering his draughtsmanship and the visionary fantasy of his paintings.
