Scholarships and funding

It is important to realise that funding a three-year course of study in London is a substantial financial commitment and requires careful thought and planning.  The MA in Painting Conservation (Wall Painting) is full-time and involves significant periods of fieldwork throughout the course. These typically last about 6-8 weeks and are often abroad; travel and accommodation expenses are paid by the Department.

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Professional Preparation Master’s Award
www.ahrc.ac.uk
British and EU students accepted for the MA in Painting Conservation (Wall Painting) are eligible to apply for an AHRC Professional Preparation Master’s Award to cover tuition fees and, in the case of British applicants, an allowance for maintenance. Although this award is highly competitive, students on the Institute’s conservation courses have thus far been very successful.

If you are offered and accept a place on the MA, it is essential to act quickly and efficiently, because the deadline for applications is soon after interviews. If you wish to apply for an AHRC award, you can find the application forms here. We will strongly support your application, but there can be no guarantee of success.

Courtauld Scholarships
The Courtauld has several scholarships available and the application form can be found here. Continuing MA in Conservation of Wall Painting students that wish to be considered should submit their scholarship application by 3 February 2012.

Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust
The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) makes awards ranging from £2,000 to £15,000 to craftsmen and women of all ages to help them further their careers. Many of the grants are awarded for postgraduate study.

Home vs. Overseas Fees

In order to qualify for ‘home’ fees under this category, you must meet all of the following criteria:

(a) you must be settled in the UK on the first day of the first academic year of the course;

(b) you must be ordinarily resident in the UK on the first day of the first academic year of the course;

(c) you must have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands (the Islands means the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) for the full three year period before the first day of the first academic year of the course (for example, if your course begins on 1 October 2012, you must have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands from 1 September 2009 to 31 August 2012);

(d) the main purpose for your residence in the UK and Islands must not have been to receive full-time education during any part of that three-year period.
