Sickert Painting
During Varnich Removal: Walter Richard Sickert’s Reclining Nude, Mornington Crescent 1905

As part of my research into the materials and techniques of Walter Richard Sickert I had the opportunity to clean an early Camden Town Nude sketch, which was recently gifted to the Galleries. The painting was completely obscured by a layer of wax and a yellowed varnish. Consequently it looked like a study made in browns rather than the boldly coloured sketch which was revealed by cleaning.

The restored painting can be seen in The Courtauld Galleries exhibition Walter Sickert: The Camden Town Nudes.

Current research/interests:

  • Painting practice in Seventeenth Century England
  • British Colourmen’s Stamps
