Professor Deborah Swallow, first female director of The Courtauld Institute of Art

Deborah Swallow became the first female director of The Courtauld Institute of Art in 2004, having previously worked at the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Her mission has been to raise the profile of The Courtauld, encourage its spirit of innovation, and to expand The Courtauld’s curriculum into Asian Art history.

Professor Swallow’s predecessor, Jim Cuno, established The Research Forum in 2003. The forum offers an extensive programme of lectures, workshops and seminars supporting advanced inquiry in the history of art and conservation.
